Part of my heart gets on a plane in just a few hours, leaving for Kampala, Uganda, Africa. McKenna Adcock's dream is finally being realized. McKenna told me when she was in 5th grade that she hoped to be serving in Africa by the time she was 15. I am not sad that God waited until she is 16. :) Neither is she. She knows the time is now.
I am so thankful for her desire to serve orphans in the slums of Kampala by helping protect them from the evil witchdoctors. The team she is with, TeensServe, will be piercing the ears of girls, making them "impure" in the eyes of the witchdoctors who sacrifice, dismember, and sell the bodies of "pure" children to business men, who bury them in the foundation of their buildings. They believe this appeases the gods and makes their businesses more profitable. While they are helping to protect their physical body, the team will also be sharing the love of Jesus with the children and their families.
Darrell and I have prayed since they were babies that our children would live dangerous lives for the Lord. This is not the first time that God has answered that prayer, but the reality of it is hitting this mama pretty hard this morning. I will pray fervently for their safety, but in all honesty, I will pray that, above all, the Lord is glorified through this team of young people and adults. I pray that this experience marks McKenna (and each of them) permanently. Someone described it as the difference between a henna tattoo that looks real, but washes off with time, and a real tattoo that cannot be removed without much intentional effort. I pray that my girl is forever changed and impacted by what she sees and that she comes home with new understanding and boldness to combat evil wherever God directs her path.
McKenna will come home on July 4th, but I feel confident that she will leave part of her heart there, with every intention of returning some day.
